PM Modi dedicates natural gas pipeline

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the 144-km-long Ramanathapuram-Thoothukudi natural gas pipeline on 17th February, 2021.
  • The new natural gas pipeline project is able to transport the fuel to a fertilizer manufacturing and petrochemical units near the coastal town from the gas fields in Ramanathapuram.
  • The project has been executed at a cost of ₹700 crore to bring 8 million metric standard cubic meter per day to Thoothukudi with the compressor station at Valantharavai village in Ramanathapuram district.
  • The pipeline is part of a mega natural gas pipeline project being implemented in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

 

Digital Indian Sign Language Dictionary launched

  • The third edition of the digital Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary launched on 17th February, 2021, included 10,000 terms across six categories.
  • The ISL dictionary consists of terms of daily use, academic, legal and administrative, medical, technical and agricultural terms.
  • The digital dictionary was developed by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre under the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry.
  • Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot launched this ISL dictionary through online.

 

Centre clears PLI plan for Telecom

  • The Union Cabinet on 17th February, 2021, approved the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in the telecom sector.
  • The scheme is funded with ₹12,195 crores for a period of five years.
  • The scheme is aimed at making India a international hub for manufacturing of telecom equipments.
  • The PLI scheme will be implemented from April 1, 2021.
  • The union minister for Information Technology and Communications is Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Airtel to buy Bharati Telemedia

  • Bharti Airtel is about to acquire 20% stake in Bharti Telemedia, its DTH arm, from an affiliate of Warburg Pincus.
  • The business is to be bought for ₹3,126 crore, which would be paid out as 36.47 million equity shares of Bharti Airtel at a price of ₹600 per share and up to ₹1,037.80 crore in cash.
  • A Warburg Pincus affiliate had, in December 2017, agreed to acquire a 20% equity stake in Bharti Telemedia.

 

APPOINTMENTS

State Information Commissioners

  • P. Dhanasekaran and M. Sreedhar have been appointed as State Information Commissioners in the Tamil Nadu Information Commission.
  • They both will hold office for a term of three years from the date on which they assume office or the date on which they attain 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
  • Their appointment comes after R. Dhakshinamurthy and G. Murugan ceased to hold the posts.

IPI India Award

  • Rikita Chopra, the Senior Assistant Editor in Indian Express, awarded the IPI India Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2020.
  • The International Press Institute is committed to promotion of free exchange of accurate and balanced news, safeguarding the freedom of press.
  • The award consists of a trophy with a citation along with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.
