NPCI Mandates UPI Apps to Display Only Verified Account Holder Names
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has mandated that all UPI applications must display only the recipient’s name as registered with their bank starting from 30 June, 2025.
Custom or user-defined names will no longer be shown in UPI payment interfaces; only the verified bank account holder name will appear to the sender.
This rule applies to all UPI platforms in India, including popular apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM.
App developers must update their systems to comply with the new NPCI directive.

By showing only bank-verified names, NPCI seeks to minimise the risk of payments to fraudulent or unintended recipients.
Fraudsters previously exploited the option to use fake display names, tricking users into sending money to the wrong person.
