E-Learning Platform - Bharat Vidya

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched an e-learning platform, Bharat Vidya.
  • Bharat Vidya is an e-learning platform for Oriental and South Asian studies.
  • This e-learning platform has been designed and developed by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI).
  • It is the first-of-its-kind online platform to provide free and paid courses covering various aspects of Indology related to art, architecture, philosophy, language and science.
  • The courses have been designed as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Chandigarh Airport to be Named After Bhagat Singh

  • On 25 September 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Chandigarh airport will now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh as a tribute to the great freedom fighter.
  • The Rs. 485 crore airport project is a joint venture of Airports Authority of India (AAI) and governments of Punjab and Haryana.
  • Governments of Punjab and Haryana had agreed to name the airport after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on August 2022.

National Conference of Environment Ministers

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Conference of Environment Ministers in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat.

  • The main aim of the Conference is to create further synergy between the Central and State Governments to implement policies for the elimination of plastic pollution and climate change.

  • The conference will promote cooperative federalism for resolving environment-related challenges.

  • The two-day Conference was organized from 23 September to 24 September 2022.

  • India’s per capita plastic consumption is 11 kg while the global average of plastic per capita consumption is 28 kg.

First Lender to Get RBI’s Approval for Rupee Trade

  • UCO Bank has received the approval from the Reserve Bank of India to open a special Vostro account with Gazprom Bank of Russia for trade settlement in Indian rupees.
  • UCO Bank is a Kolkata-based lender, is the first bank to receive the regulator’s approval following the decision of RBI to allow Indian Banks to settle trade in Indian currency in July.
  • A vostro account is an account a correspondent bank holds on behalf of another bank.
  • These accounts are an essential aspect of correspondent banking in which the bank holding the funds acts as custodian for or manages the account of a foreign counterpart.
  • Gazprom Bank is a Russian lender, which was set up by World’s largest gas producer and exporter Gazprom to provide banking services for gas industry enterprises.

Federal Bank Partners with BBPS

  • One of India’s leading private sector banks, Federal Bank has associated with Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL), the wholly-owned subsidiary of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Lulu Financial Group to facilitate utility bill payment services for non-resident Indian Diaspora.
  • This arrangement enables overseas remittance partners like Exchange Houses and Banks to pay Indian utility bills of over 20,000 billers in more than 20 categories in a cost-effective and convenient option.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), permitted foreign inward remittances to be received under the rupee drawing arrangement (RDA) through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

HDFC Bank Signs Agreement with Refinitiv

  • HDFC Bank signed a multi-year data and technology agreement with Refinitiv, a London Stock Exchange Group business as the Mumbai-based lender looks to reach more customers and cut costs.

  • HDFC Bank will also enable its users with Refinitiv Workspace, which will offer access to tools including real-time market data, news and fundamentals data.

  • Refinitiv is an American-British global provider of financial market data.

 

SPORTS NEWS

Chennai Open 2022

  • Linda Fruhvirtova, a 17-year-old tennis player from the Czech Republic won the Chennai Open 2022 WTA 250 tennis singles.

  • In the final, the adolescent defeated Poland’s third-seeded Magda Linette.

  • The top-seeded doubles team of Brazil’s Luisa Stefani and Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski won the lopsided final by a score of 6-2, 6-1 over Georgia’s Natela Dzalamidze and Anna Blinkova of the Russian Tennis Federation.

 

AWARDS & PRIZES

Hermann Kesten Award

  • Indian author and poet Meena Kandasamy has been awarded the Hermann Kesten Prize of the German chapter of the PEN International writers association.

  • She has been awarded for her work on themes of caste and ethnic oppression.

  • The award was named in honour of the German novelist Hermann Kesten.
  • Her novels have been shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Jhalak Prize and the Hindu Lit Prize.
  • The PEN Center, Germany will present the award to the Indian author at a ceremony in Darmstadt on 15 November 2022.

Queen Elizabeth II Woman of the Year Award

  • British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been named the winner of the first-ever Queen Elizabeth II Woman of the Year award.

  • She was presented with this award at the Asian Achievers Awards 2022 ceremony in London.

  • These awards were established in 2000 to honour South Asians for their great achievements in the UK.

 

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Two Indigenous Diving Support Vessels

  • The Indian Navy has launched first-of-its-kind two indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessels (DSVs)- Nistar and Nipun in Visakhapatnam.

  • The two vessels have been manufactured by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).

  • The vessels are 4-m-long, and 22.8 m at the broadest point and will have a displacement of 9,350 tonnes.

  • These ships would be deployed for deep-sea diving operations.
  • These ships will be capable of sustained patrolling, conducting search and rescue operations and carrying out helicopter operations on the high seas.
  • The vessels were launched by Kala Hari Kumar in the presence of Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff who presided over the ceremony as chief guest.
