Vedanta Partners with NHAI
- Vedanta Aluminium has announced a long-term contract with NHAI to construct greener roads with fly-ash in Odisha.
- Fly-ash, which is a by-product of thermal power generation using coal is used in the cement, construction and infrastructure industries.
- Vedanta Aluminium has utilised nearly 2.8 lakh tonnes of fly-ash in cement production and supplied 2.7 lakh tonnes for brick manufacturing in FY22.
- Every tonne of fly-ash can save around 700-800 of carbon emissions and 341 litres of water.
MyGov Karnataka
- MyGov Karnataka was launched by Chief Minister Shri Basavraj Bommai. Karnataka becomes the 17th state to have its own MyGov state instance.
- MyGov Karnataka was launched to promote participatory governance in state.
- It also aims to promote active citizen participation and engagement in governance and policymaking.
- Citizens can register on karnataka.mygov.in to share opinions, ideas and suggestions with the Government.
DRDO & Indian Navy Conduct Successful Maiden Flight-Test
- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully conducted maiden flight-test of indigenously-developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile.
- On 18 May 2022, it was launched from a Naval Helicopter from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur Odisha.
- It is the first indigenous air launched anti-ship missile system for the Indian Navy.
- The missile employed many new technologies, including an indigenously developed launcher for the helicopter.
- The missile guidance system includes state-of-the-art navigation system and integrated avionics.
Cotton Council of India
- The Union Government has announced the formation of the Cotton Council of India under the Chairmanship of renowned veteran Suresh Bhai Kotak.
- It will have representation from Textiles, Agriculture, Commerce, and Finance Ministries along with Cotton Corporation of India and Cotton Research Institute.
- The first meeting of the proposed council has been scheduled for 28 May 2022.
- The council will discuss, deliberate, and prepare a robust action plan for bringing out a tangible improvement in this field.
- The Minister emphasized the need for making available better-quality seeds to improve the productivity of cotton farmers.
Vadnagar International Conference

On 18 May 2022, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the ‘Vadnagar International Conference’ at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on the occasion of World Museum Day.

The 3-day conference has been organized jointly by the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture of the Government of Gujarat and the Union Ministry of Culture.
- The Chief Minister announced that the state government is fully prepared to promote the state’s archaeological heritage and culture on the global stage.
- The conference is supported by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Ministry of Heavy Industries Signs MoU with NRDC

Ministry of Heavy Industries has signed an MoU with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) for implementation of the Scheme for enhancement of competitiveness in the Indian capital goods sector.

The corporation will conduct the activities like evaluation and review of the scheme, management of intellectual property rights and commercialization support for the products developed under Capital Goods Scheme.
- The vision of this MoU is to make India a global hub for the manufacturing of capital goods.

Fertilizer Agreement with Jordan

Government of India has signed key fertilizer pacts with Jordan as supplies and prices of the key the agriculture commodity get impacted due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister of India Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya in visit to Jordan for securing long and short-term supplies of fertilizers.
- During the visit, pacts were signed with Jordan Phosphate Mining Company (JPMC) for supplies of 30 LMT Rock Phosphate, 2.50 LMT DAP, 1 LMT phosphoric acid for the year 2022 with the Indian public, cooperative and private sector companies.
- A long-term pact has been signed for 5 years for annual supplies of 2.75 LMT Units of Muriate of potash (MoP).

Odisha emerged as the champions of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Odisha defeated Karnataka with score of 2-0 in the final.
- Jharkhand defeated Haryana by 3-2 to secure third position.

Piramal Group Chairman Ajay Piramal has received the prestigious Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award.

Piramal has received the award for services to the UK-India trade relationship as India Co-Chair of the UK-India CEO Forum.
- As co-chair of India-UK CEO forum since 2016, he has been to help strengthen the strong bilateral relations between the two countries through greater economic co-operation.
- The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) is awarded for having a prominent role at national level.

India to Overtake Germany in Vehicle Market

According to the report released by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), India has surpassed Germany to become the 4th largest vehicle market in the world.

India sold 3,759,398 vehicles in 2021, compared to 2,973,319 vehicles in Germany. This translates to a difference of almost 26 percent.
- India was expected to become the third-largest vehicle market by 2025.
- The first position is secured by China, the US secured second position followed by Japan.

The Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd appointed Pieter Elbers as its new chief executive officer (CEO).

He will join IndiGo on or before 01 October 2022.
- He succeeds Mr Ronojoy Dutta, who has decided to retire on 30 September 2022.
- Elbers is the first foreign chief executive of IndiGo airlines.
- IndiGo is the largest airline in India with a 53.5% market share.
MD and CEO of Airtel

Bharti Airtel, India's 2nd telco, announced that its board has reappointed Gopal Vittal as Managing Director & CEO for a further period of five years ending on January 31, 2028.
- The reappointment came on a day the telco posted consolidated net profit at Rs 2,007.8 crore in the March quarter.
- Based on the recommendations of HR & nomination committee and subject to the approval of shareholders, the Board of Directors has approved the re-appointment of Gopal Vittal.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

World AIDS Vaccine Day is celebrated every year on 18 May.
- The event highlights the need for a vaccine that might prevent acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
- The event also honours the countless health professionals, scientists, community members and volunteers who are helping to develop an AIDS vaccine.
- The day is also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day.
- It was observed for the first time in 1998.
