Trilateral maritime exercise SITMEX-20 in Andaman Sea

  • The 2nd edition of India, Singapore and Thailand Trilateral Maritime Exercise SITMEX-20 conducted in Andaman Sea from 21 to 22 November 20.
  • The SITMEX series of exercises conducted to enhance mutual inter-cooperation and acquiring best practices between IN, Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and Royal Thai Navy (RTN).
  • The 2020 edition of the exercise hosted by RSN.
  • The first edition of SITMEX, hosted by Indian Navy, conducted off Port Blair in September 2019.

 

Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates Seismic Survey Campaign by Oil India Ltd

  • Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the Seismic Survey Campaign by Oil India Limited.
  • The survey under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy, OALP, will be undertaken in 5 blocks of 8 districts of Odisha in the Mahanadi basin and nearby areas.
  • The commercial production of oil and gas from the Mahanadi basin will be a game changer in the socio-economic development of Odisha.

NHAI to collaborate with over 200 premier institutes to leverage local expertise

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to take an initiative of collaborating with Premier Institutes to leverage local expertise.
  • According to NHAI, as many as 18 IITs, 26 NITs and 190 other reputed Engineering colleges have agreed to collaborate with NHAI among which about 200 Institutes have already signed the MOU.
  • This move by NHAI is to adopt nearby stretches of National Highways, on voluntary basis under Institution Social Responsibility.

Green Climate Fund approves USD 256 million for Bangladesh

  • The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved dollar 256 million for Bangladesh in grants and loans to meet its Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction targets under the Paris agreement.
  • The financing provided as an integrated package for textile and Ready Made Garments (RMG) sectors of Bangladesh are the largest industrial contributors in carbon emission.
  • By 2030, Bangladesh is committed to reduce its GHG emission by 15 percent compared to business-as-usual scenario. 
  • The funding will facilitate capacity building, awareness raising, policy development and support in loan disbursal and evaluation of programme parameters to textile and RMG sectors in Bangladesh.
  • GCF was set up under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2010 as the world’s largest dedicated fund to help developing countries reduce their carbon emissions.

Scottish writer Douglas Stuart wins Booker prize for novel Shuggie Bain

  • Scottish writer Douglas Stuart has won the 2020 Booker Prize for fiction with his debut novel Shuggie Bain.
  • Douglas Stuart has won the 50,000-Pound prize after being announced the winner by chair of the judges Margaret Busby.
  • The Booker Prize shortlist also included Indian-origin writer Avni Doshi’s novel ‘Burnt Sugar’.
  • The Booker Prize first awarded in the year 1969, considered one of the leading prizes for literary fiction written in English.

  • Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank conferred with the Vatayan Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution in the field of literature.
  • Mr Pokhriyal received the award at Vatayan-UK felicitation ceremony organised through video conferencing by the British Institution Group in England.

World Fisheries Day celebrated on 21st November

  • World Fisheries Day is being celebrated on 21st November every year to demonstrate solidarity with all fisher-folk communities, fish farmers and concerned stakeholders throughout the world.
  • The Department of Fisheries in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is celebrating the day at NASC Complex in New Delhi.
  • During the event, the Central Government awarded the best performing States in the Fisheries Sector for 2019-20.
  • India contributes about 7.7 per cent to the global fish production and it ranks 4th in global exports of fish products.
