International women’s day was celebrated on March 8th.

  • International women’s day(IWD) was celebrated on March 8th of every year with a view to celebrate and honour women achievers in various field and to induce gender equality among the society.
  • The theme for IWD 2020 is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights".
  • In India various schemes and initiatives were launched by the Government with the view of providing assistance to the women in the country in various sectors.

  • After the resignation of PM Oleksiy Honcharuk, Ukraine parliament or Verkhovna Rada approved Denys Shmygal as a new Prime Minister.

Mars 2020 rover was named as Perseverance: NASA

  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) has announced that the name of the 5th Mars (red planet) rover as Perseverance, earlier the rover was known by its codename Mars 2020.
  • The name was suggested by Alexander Mather, 7th grade student of a school in Burke, Virginia.

MSDE launches Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship programme

  • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched the Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship programme in the Indian Institute of Management in Bengaluru.
  • The Fellowship programme was launched as a part of the SANKALP programme of the ministry to provide skilled manpower for District Skill Committees to prepare the District Skill Development plan.

Sanitary napkin disposal is to be made mandatory from January 2021.

  • Union Minister for Environment has announced the supply of a biodegradable bag with each napkin from January 2021.
  • The Minister responsible revealed the decision while interacting with the waste collectors of SWACH Pune, a wholly-owned worker’s cooperative during the International Women’s day celebration.

Third all-Women Post Office was opened at New Delhi.

  • Department of Posts, Delhi Circle has opened the third all-Women Post Office in the National Capital Region.
  • The post office was inaugurated under the New Delhi South West Division on the outskirts of the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th.
  • The first two PO’s were at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi and at Mahim Bazaar, West zone of Mumbai.

2nd anniversary of Poshan Abhiyaan 'Poshan Pakhwada' celebration begins.

  • The two-week-long celebration of Poshan Pakhwada 2020 commemorating the 2nd anniversary of Poshan Abhiyaan started from march 8th.
  • The Scheme was launched by PM Narendra Modi in 2018 for the Holistic Nourishment of the people of India.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Government of India.

President Ramnath Kovind gave the Nari Shakti Puraskar, a National Award is given annually for exceptional work towards the cause of women empowerment, especially for vulnerable and marginalized women, to 15 women on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

The following are the awardees and their respective fields of achievements.

  • Athlete - Mann Kaur (103-year-old)
  • Indian Air Force’s first women fighter pilots - Mohana Singh, Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvedi,
  • Farmers - Padala Bhudevi and Bina Devi,
  • Artisan - Arifa Jaan,
  • Environmentalist - Chami Murmu,
  • Entrepreneur - Nilza Wangmo,
  • Automotive research professional - Rashmi Urdhwardeshe, Lady Mason Kalavati Devi,
  • Twin Mountaineers - Tashi and Nungshi Malik
  • Classical vocalist - Kaushiki Chakroborty

IRDAI approves the reappointment of Sanjeev Nautiyal as SBI’s Life Insurance Companies MD & CEO.

Sanjeev Nautiyal, has been reappointed as the Managing director(MD) & Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of SBI Life.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and the Board of Directors of SBI Life Insurance Company has given the Approval.

He assumes the position from March 10th 2020 replacing Arijit Basu.

HMRL tie up with Paytm to launch QR-based tickets.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) tied up with Paytm and launched a QR-code-based metro ticketing system at Rasoolpura metro station Hyderabad.

It helps people book digital tickets easily and HMRL is to introduce two more trains between Ameerpet and Raidurgam route.

UNCTAD estimates impact of Coronavirus on trade.

  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimated and prepared “Global trade impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Epidemic” by the International Trade and Commodities division.
  • India is one among the countries which are affected by the manufacturing slowdown in china due to COVID-19 outbreak, showing a 50-billion-dollar decrease in global exports.
  • European Union (EU) tops the list with an impact of USD 15.6 billion, followed by United States with USD 5.8 billion and by Japan with USD 5.2 billion.

NADA provisionally suspends Indian runner Prachi choudhary.

  • National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has provisionally suspended Prachi choudary, 400-m runner from Uttar Pradesh, on testing positive for the presence of anabolic steroid, Oxandrolone.
  • She was tested at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports center in Patiala by NADA’s Dope Control Officers(DCO) and said positive by Qatar’s Doha testing laboratory.
  • The suspension further leads to not qualify herself for Olympic qualification match.

OBITUARY

Former Union law minister Hansraj Bhardwaj passes away.

  • Former Union law minister and Congress veteran Hansraj Bhardwaj died in New Delhi on March 8th.
  • Bhardwaj was a Rajya Sabha member for five terms from April 1982 to June 2009.
