Finance Minister launches IT initiatives ICEDASH, ATITHI for improved customs clearance

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled two new IT Initiatives - ICEDASH and ATITHI for improved monitoring and pace of customs clearance of imported goods and facilitating arriving international passengers.
  • ICEDASH is an Ease of Doing Business monitoring dashboard of the Indian Customs helping the public see the daily Customs clearance times of import cargo at various ports and airports.
  • The ATITHI app will facilitate hassle-free and faster clearance by Customs at the airports and enhance the experience of international tourists and other visitors at the airports.

Ministry of Shipping Announces First Ever Movement of Container Cargo on Brahmaputra

  • In line with Government's focus on improving connectivity to the North Eastern Region (NER), a landmark container cargo consignment will sail on inland waterways from Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) terminal at Pandu in Guwahati.
  • Gopal Krishna, Secretary (Shipping) will flag off the inland vessel MV Maheshwari carrying 53 TEUs (containers) of petrochemicals, edible oil and beverage etc. The 12-15 days voyage will be an integrated IWT movement via National Waterway-1 (river Ganga), NW-97 (Sunderbans), Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and NW-2 (river Brahmaputra).

Biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference begins in Colombo, Sri Lanka

  • In Sri Lanka, the biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference began in Colombo today under the theme Equal Access to Justice and the Rule of Law.
  • Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad will be representing India at the conference.
  • The four-day conference participated by Law Ministers and Attorney Generals from Commonwealth countries seeks to address challenges faced by millions of people seeking to resolve legal problems or disputes.
  • Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland emphasized the event’s significance in the current global context in which obstacles to justice are prevalent in many forms.

IPS Officer Aditya Mishra Appointed Chairman of Land Ports Authority of India

  • Senior IPS officer Aditya Mishra was appointed as the chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), according to an order issued by the personnel ministry.
  • Mishra is a 1989 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mishra as the chairman of the LPAI on the recommendations of a search-cum-selection panel.

  • Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has been selected for the prestigious Italian Golden Sand Art Award 2019. He will get the award at the International Scorrana Sand Nativity festival which will be held in Italy from November 13 to 18.

  • Dr Neeraj Sharma from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney -- considered one of the global leaders in the use of neutron and X-ray scattering methods to study materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries - has won the ‘Early Career Researcher of the Year (Physical Sciences)’.

Yvette Lundy- French Resistance member who survived Nazi camps dies at 103

  • Yvette Lundy, a well-known member of the French Resistance and a Nazi concentration camp survivor, has died at the age of 103.
  • Ms Lundy supplied fake papers to Jewish families, men fleeing forced labour, and escaped prisoners of war during the Nazi occupation of France.
