Prime Minister launches the Age Appropriate Fitness Protocols

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Age Appropriate Fitness Protocols on the first anniversary of the Fit India Movement, virtually.
  • The nation-wide online Fit India Dialogue was organized to celebrate the First Anniversary of the Fit India Movement.
  • Fit India Movement is a nation-wide movement in India to encourage people to remain healthy and fit by including physical activities and sports in their daily lives, launched by PM Modi last year.
  • Mr Modi held interactions with cricketer Virat Kohli, actor Milind Soman, footballer Afshan Ashiq among others who shared their fitness experiences with him.

AYUSH Ministry inks MoU with Industry Bodies to promote Medicinal Plants cultivation

  • The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH signed a MoU virtually with the major AYUSH and Herbal industry bodies covering a set of measures to promote medicinal plant cultivation.
  • The industry bodies, which signed the MoU, include ADMA (Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturer’s Association), Mumbai, AMAM (Association for Manufactures of Ayurvedic Medicines), AMMOI (Ayurvedic Medicines Manufacturers Organization of India), AHNMI (Association for Herbal and Nutraceutical Manufacturers of Inida), FICCI (Federation of Indian Industries), and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry).
  • AYUSH ministry would provide necessary support to resolve the issues related to the industry provided they form a combined team and approach with solutions to the respective problems faced by them.

Agricultural Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launches “Centralized Farm Machinery Performance Testing Portal”

  • Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched the “Centralized Farm Machinery Performance Testing Portal” which has been developed by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare as a further step to improve services of farm machinery testing institutions and bringing out transparency in the entire process of testing and evaluation of machines.
  • To promote agricultural mechanization, the Union Agriculture Minister appealed to industry representatives to design farm equipment, which can be utilized in cost effective manner by small and marginal farmers.
  • This portal will facilitate manufacturers in applying, communicating and monitoring the progress of testing of their machines in a seamless manner, as it is easily accessible from any location and from any device connected to the Internet.

 

President of India Ram Nath Kovind virtually conferred the National Service Scheme (NSS) Awards for the year 2018-19

  • The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind virtually conferred the National Service Scheme (NSS) Awards for the year 2018-19 on 24th September, 2020 from Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The National Service Scheme (NSS) Award for the year 2018-19 was given to 42 awardees in 3 different categories like University/ +2 Council, NSS Units and their Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers.
  • Emphasizing on the activities conducted by the youth volunteers, the President said that the volunteers were instrumental in creating awareness about social distancing and the proper usage of masks in times of COVID 19.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India to support airport expansion project in Maldives

  • India is set to support the expansion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport located in the northern part of the Maldives.
  • The project work is expected to begin next year and will involve extending the runway to 2,200m, as well as the modernisation of terminals, fuel farms, cargo terminal and fire station.
  • The runway extension will enable larger aircraft such as Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s to land at the airport.
  • Earlier, India extended an $800m line of credit through EXIM Bank for several infrastructure projects in the Maldives. This credit line is also expected to support the Hanimaadhoo Airport expansion.

Australian cricketer Dean Jones dies of cardiac arrest in Mumbai

  • Former Australia batsman Dean Jones has died of cardiac arrest in Mumbai.
  • The 59-year-old Dean Mervyn Jones was part of the 1987 World Cup winning team.
  • He was was one of the great ambassadors of the game associating himself with Cricket development across South Asia.

 

Suresh C. Angadi, Union Minister of State for Railways passed away

  • Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, who had tested positive for coronavirus passed away at AIIMS.
  • The 65-year old Member of Lok Sabha from Belagavi constituency in Karnataka became seriously ill and was hospitalised a week ago.
  • He was involved in many social and cultural activities with special interest in Industry, Agriculture and Education of the poor. He was also Chairman, Suresh Angadi Education Foundation, Belgaum since 2009.

 

Former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Secretary to the Govt. of India, Dr. Sekhar Basu passes away

  • Former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Secretary to the Govt. of India, Dr. Sekhar Basu passed away this morning (24 September 2020) at a hospital in Kolkata.
  • Dr. Basu was Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) from October 2015 to September 2018.
  • Prior to his assumption of charge as Secretary, DAE, he was holding the position of Director, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) from June 2012 to October 2015.
  • He played a key role in obtaining government approvals for 10 Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Two Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs).
